Hopefully you saw our weekly competition on social media in the last 10 weeks of 2017?
The object of the competition was to decide if you thought each image was a photograph or a photorealistic computer generated image made by our team here at D Cube Design.
If you threw your hat in the ring, you’ll be familiar with the images below. We’ve chosen a few to showcase the really interesting results. So, how did you fare?
The first image of the competition was a cushion.
60% of you thought this was a photograph rather than a photorealistic CGI image, a great start to showcasing how realistic Computer Generated Images are, as it was made from scratch!
By week three, responses were a little more skeptical, with 55% deciding this image of a desk with a scale drawing and pens was a photograph.
This was the only real photograph of the competition, and therefore just under half of all entrants had been lured into a false sense of security, thinking this was a computer generated image.
As the weeks progressed, images such as these M&Ms sweets in a bowl had 47% of entrants sure that this was a photograph, again, tricking them with our photorealistic capabilities.
It makes you want to pick a handful of sweets out, doesn’t it!
We’re really proud that this competition was able to showcase 10 brilliant images, and understand how perceptions of images are taken for granted, which reminds us of a quote by Frank Stella “What you see is what you see.”

Of course, it’s also a good time to announce the winner of our competition was Mr Nick McLean, who has won a Samsung Tab A 10.1 Inch worth £230 for taking part.
The prize was drawn at random after entries closed on 31st December 2017.
